Justin Rackley, known as Lakeforkguy, creates fishing videos on youtube and other social platforms. Lakeforkguy travels to freshwater and saltwater fishing spots to explore new fish species and fishing techniques to show as many fishing places as possible and help viewers catch more fish, and recently he wanted to make a yellowfin tuna video.

Summer in Venice: Now that we’re past the midway point of Summer, 2017 we thought the time was right to catch up with all our friends, and talk about fishing out of Venice Marina in the Gulf of Mexico.

Captain Colin Byrd put it best when he said, “bait has shown up in full force, and our tuna bite is on fire. August is looking spectacular — tuna will be strong, big fish already here, and we know as we get into late summer and fall even bigger ones roll in. Capt. Billly Wells and Capt. Colin Byrd are having a great summer on the f/v Wild Bill. This 37ft Freeman has been on the scene of many doubles and triples in July.

As in “doubled up on tuna, tripled up on tuna, doubled up on swordfish,” says Colin.

“We’ve had great success,” says Billy. “The boat runs like a charm with these new Mercury outboards, and we’re getting to the fish early and often.”

Captain Billy Wells is no stranger to long days on the Gulf of Mexico, and no stranger to the deft art of daytime swordfish action. This spring, his keen sense of timing and adventure was spot on. As usual, customers come down to Venice to fish with Capt. Billy and they almost always want to catch yellowfin tuna.

However, once the ice box is filled with six or seven, sometimes 12 or more tuna, most anglers agree — that’s enough meat for our friends and family back home. Let’s turn our attention to another species.

So, … Capt. Jordan Ellis names his new boat after his beloved momma. And, … his momma’s favorite fish in the whole world is a blue marlin. And, … on the first trip out in the f/v Kimmi — they land a blue marlin. Coincidence? We think not. Powers above; lots of Love! Momma Kim would be proud.

Jordan and his charter braved iffy (nautical term there) weather, and headed out a bit later than normal from Venice Marina. First cast brought in a yellowfin, and the second fish to the boat was a blue marlin.

Yes, the Marlin flag flew high and mighty on the Kimmi as she made her maiden voyage, and smiles were wide all around when Jordan and his charter made it back to the dock. Final tally? Seven tuna and one marlin.
